Introducing the NEW 2G Flicx multi-aged pitch (MAP) for schools and clubs

Flicx UK are delighted to roll out a new product for the 2017/2018 season, the 2G Flicx Multi-Aged-Pitch (MAP). The MAP pitch is specifically aimed at schools and clubs who need a match pitch that can cater for different age groups. With this new product coaches can move the stumps according to the colour coded creases demarcated for the various age groups to change the pitch size from 20.12m to 18.12m or even 16.12m depending on which team is playing or practising. The MAP pitch also has an additional 1m section behind both sets of wickets, this is of great benefit to bowlers who are now on the pitch in their delivery stride.

Feedback is suggesting that the 2G Flicx MAP pitch will solve capacity issues for clubs and you have the value derived from only purchasing one pitch for all your age groups. Versatility is the key point here and our 2G Flicx Pitch can be roll out on grass, astro, concrete, beaches or pretty much any firm, flat surface to convert it into a cricketing venue. The new 2G tile also performs very well indoors and with each pitch coming in two rolls, your 2G Flicx Pitch can also be easily zipped apart to create 2 batting ends for the nets or kwik cricket on your outfield, again increasing your capacity and enabling more cricket to be played.

Speaking about the new pitch, Flicx UK’s business development manager Ashley Appleby commented “This new product is really going to tick a lot of boxes for many clubs and schools. It gives clubs and schools even more versatility than ever before to use a 2G Flicx pitch for multiple age groups without any additional preparation time. Time and cost savings will help cricket masters and coaches, spend more time developing their players skills so that can only be a good thing”

The 2016 Yorkshire Cricket Foundation | Beach Cricket Festival on a 2G Flicx Pitch

This weekend saw the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation host its now famous beach cricket competition where local cricket clubs compete in mini games on Scarborough Beach. For the third year, the 2G Flicx Pitch was involved in the project … we just roll out our wicket and let the fun commence. This year a blue skills pitch was used complete with the YCF logo embedded in the crease.

The YCF Beach Cricket Festival 2016

In addition to the Beach Cricket Festival, the YCF have a new initiative that is using a 2G Flicx Pitch to help create an authentic facility. Pop Up Cricket invites children between the ages of 6 and 13, to free cricket sessions, held in three local venues across Leeds.

Funded by the Charitable Youth Trust the sessions, held on Tuesdays and Thursdays over the last three weeks, targeted communities in areas of deprivation, focusing on children who may not have had the opportunity or means to play cricket before. Attracting children from different backgrounds, ethnicities and genders, the cricket coaching introduced cricket to new audiences who may not have had the opportunity to play before, with an impressive turn out of around 60 children in attendance for each day!

It’s been fantastic to see the different communities have the opportunity to play cricket in their local parks. The enthusiasm shown for the game and spirit shown during the sessions demonstrates how powerful sport can be in bringing communities together.

Flicx UK’s business development manager Ashley Appleby attended the beach cricket event, alongside some officials from the ECB and the feedback on the pitch was entirely positive. Nick Robinson, Project Officer at the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation said

“The 2G Flicx cricket pitch helped us tremendously with our pop up cricket events as we are able to take the game of cricket anywhere. The upgraded 2G surface provides such good pace and bounce even in areas that you would never be able to play cricket usually while the colour coded tiles in the 2G Flicx skills pitch help aspiring cricketers to focus on their areas when bowling and batting. It also makes the game look more fun and exciting’’

A Flicx Pitch Case Study by the ICC Academy in Dubai

The ICC Academy in Dubai’s mission is to become and remain the world’s leading cricket development, performance and education institution. It’s facilities are unrivalled and attract many international teams with the venue containing 2 full-size cricket ovals with floodlights, 7 synthetic and 3 hybrid pitches, an air-conditioned pavilion with state of the art gymnasiums, performance analysis technology etc and an indoor cricket centre including 6 indoor practice pitches and 4 Flicx Pitches which arrived in 2014.

The Flicx Pitches are a vital part of the ICC Academy’s schools program in Dubai with the key benefits being the ability to host multiple games on one oval and to also take the pressure off the main oval at the facility. Large tournaments are now possible and as a result the program is being expanded this year to give every school in Dubai access to these world class facilities. Speaking about the Flicx Pitches Samuel Charnley, Warriors Program Lead said

“The Flicx Pitch is an extremely powerful piece of equipment for the coaches and the ICC Academy, for numerous reasons. The pitch allows us to transform our ovals into an additional 2 grounds allowing us to play more games in shorter spaces of times. The pitches also create the ability for us to run junior tournaments with far greater ease.”

The schools programme at the academy aims to attract every school in Dubai to the centre

The pitches are easily rolled up and rolled out onto the outfield and in the future program sponsors will also be able to add their branding onto the surfaces. In the hot, desert climate in the UAE, the Flicx Pitch is a great solution to enable cricket to develop for example in schools where it might be very expensive to grow and maintain a grass surface or their might be a lack of expertise from the staff, the Flicx pitch can be rolled out to create an authentic cricket experience by laying it over an astro or rubbercrumb pitch which most schools have on site. With many international schools in Dubai with large expat communities from the likes of the UK, India, South Africa etc, the sport has the potential to grow with facility solutions like the versatile pitch from Flicx UK.

Speaking about her visit to the ICC Academy, Flicx marketing manager Kate Costin said ” Flicx are very honoured to have 4 pitches at the ICC Academy … the facilities are first class and it’s great to hear how successful the schools program has been and Sam’s exciting plans for its development. We certainly believe that the Flicx Pitch is exceptionally well suited to conditions in Dubai and are keen to speak with schools in the UAE who want to create their own cricket facilities with the addition of a Flicx Pitch which going forward would be our new and improved 2G surface.

Attracting new players and boosting participation with the 2G Flicx Pitch

Much has been debated around how to get more people playing cricket…

Attracting new players

Participation numbers have dropped by 64,000 in a single year, down from 908,000 in 2013 to 844,000 last season. Just as alarmingly, five per cent of all organised fixtures were conceded in 2014 because at least one of the teams was unable to field 11 bodies, with the obvious knock-on effects of such cancellations breeding disillusionment among those who have given up their weekends for a cause they want, with profoundly good reason, to believe in. And there’s more: less than a third of those 844,000 regard themselves as ‘core’ players – defined as people who  could commit to at least 12 matches in a league season – with the best part of the remaining 600,000 deemed ‘occasional’ or ‘cameo’ players.

It’s not a single approach but a philosophy where making it easy and enjoyable for everyone of all ages and abilities is the way to go but being able to offer something distinctive and innovative when it comes to cricketing facilities is certainly a real plus.

Whether it’s a cricket square or in a field, on a beach or in a sports hall, a cricket surface you can trust is an argument for quality of practice and value for money. Talking to Head of PE at Sacred Heart School in Battersea, Mark Costin, his school stumped up for a 2G Flicx Match pitch to guarantee a playing surface where the bounce was true.

In his case, the investment was well worth it because it made for consistent junior cricket practice and pushed the better cricketers who no longer had to rely on a makeshift, bobbly football pitch.

With no groundsman or expertise to prepare grass wickets, a drop-on pitch made a lot of sense for this South London school and Mark needed little prompting to praise the upgrade:

“It’s absolutely transformed the standard of cricket that we can teach and means we also now play matches against other schools.” – Mark Costin, Head of PE, Sacred Heart School (Battersea).

Mark also makes the valid point that the Last Man Stands format has gone some way to breaking the taboo, and perhaps even snobbery, that we should all play on a grass wicket rather than an artificial pitch.
