The 2G Flicx Pitch is a portable, roll out – roll up solution so it ticks the boxes for those looking to play in parks or open spaces as the pitch can be rolled out just before the game and there is no damage to the under surface. Cricket academies have seen huge benefit in using batting ends to develop their talent whilst the pitch is also commonly laid on concrete or synthetic turf fields to convert them into cricketing venues.

Players and clubs always point to the increase in the match quality with the 2G Flicx Pitch. It provides a grippy surface where the ball comes onto the bat nicely, favouring neither the batters or bowlers.

“We take immense pride in providing the Beehive State with a pitch which enhances the scope of cricket in Utah to the next level. Our new pitch allows an even playing field for the batsman and bowlers, helps the youngsters develop their skills as well as provides a set-up for adults to hone their skills. We truly believe that the 2G Flicx is to play a catalyst for us as a club to reach one of our true goals and that is to create opportunities for more people to enjoy the global game!!” – Utah Lions

What is the process to ship a 2G Flicx Pitch to Australia?

Interest in the 2G Flicx Pitch is at a record high in Australia with significant upgrades in the 2G tile creating a softer, more versatile wicket which produces a consistent bounce on various under surfaces. In Australia, with changes to junior cricket formats on the horizon, the 2G Flicx Pitch allows an oval to be split into 3 or 4 junior games whilst councils can host cricket at grounds which haven’t been able to host cricket before; maximising usage.

Despite the distance of over 10,000 miles; the process to ship a 2G Flicx Pitch from the UK to Australia is fairly quick and simple as Logistics Manager Gary Luke explains…

“There are currently two options for a prospective customer in Australia; sea freight or air freight. Air Freight typically costs $1,000-1,400 AUD but has the speed benefit of meaning you could be playing within two weeks of your order being placed however the more cost-effective solution is sea freight.”

SPECIAL OFFER – Flicx UK offer FREE sea freight to port to all Australian customers to all major ports*. For door to door air freight we make a £300 ($500 AUD) contribution towards the total TNT Economy price which varies slightly depending on location**

SEA FREIGHT process…

  1. Flicx UK arrange pitch dispatch (after customer payment is received) with our couriers
  2. Transit is typically 35 days at sea
  3. Once the pitch docks (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or Brisbane) our appointed Australian freight forwarder will contact the customer.
  4. Paperwork provided by Flicx UK (Invoice, Packing List, Aussie Packing Declaration, Bill of Lading) will need to be sent by the customer to the freight forwarder
  5. Clearance costs will need to be paid by the customer (Australian GST – 15%, Duty – 5%, Custom Clearance – approximately $175 AUD and the local delivery charge. Pitch Delivered!

AIR FREIGHT process….

  1. Flicx UK will arrange pitch dispatch (after customer payment is received)
  2. Pitch sent via TNT Economy service (door to door). The cost is typically $1,000-1,400 AUD of which Flicx UK will contribute $500 AUD**.
  3. TNT will phone the customer prior to delivery for the Australia GST and Duty payment (15% GST and 5% Duty)
  4. The pitch will be delivered. Time of process is around 7-10 days from dispatch

As you can see from the above steps, you don’t need any detailed import experience or shipping knowledge to get your pitch into Australia and the Flicx UK team will be in communication with you every step of the way to guide you and send you the relevant paperwork. Obviously, you will need to factor in uncleared costs (GST, duty for Air freight and adding custom clearance and local delivery for sea freight) into your 2G Flicx Pitch costings but still the 2G Flicx Pitch provides excellent value for money and a great versatile surface solution for clubs, schools and even back yards.

5 reasons why US cricketers LOVE the 2G Flicx Pitch

The 2G Flicx Pitch is a big hit across the pond in America … we are still receiving a really high number of enquiries for our versatile, roll out, portable solution and here’s our top 5 reasons why it’s so suitable for the US market.

1. It performs really well on artificial surfaces & can convert a grass or baseball field into a cricket venue

The 2G Flicx Pitch performs really well on a number of surfaces … these includes those found readily in the states including rubbercrumb pitches. By rolling a Flicx Pitch on top of this surface, you can convert the field into a cricket arena. We have also found alot of clubs playing on baseball parks by laying our roll our wicket on top of the diamond as seen in the All Stars Series organised by Shane Warne and Sachin Tendulkar http://cricketallstars2015.com/

Any flat, hard under surface will produce a great consistent bounce with a 2G Flicx Pitch including on a grass pitch as pictured below with the Utah Lions CC. Preparation of a grass field is minimal, you just need to cut it down short then roll the pitch on top. Rolling it will help bed the pitch in and clients have been reporting that the standard of their game and the players skills has increased hugely.

2. Selling advertising space can fund your pitch

Several customers in America have been leading the way in using the 2G Flicx Pitch as an advertising source by charging sponsor a premium for their logo to have a prominent position on their new wicket. One customer who purchased 2 pitches, managed to get 4 different sponsors on board. These logos were sprayed on, however now Flicx offer a very high quality digital print on all pitch branding.

3. The Dollar-Pound exchange rate makes purchasing a 2G Flicx Pitch very attractive for US clubs

With the weakening of the British Pound against the USD, it has made the price of the Flicx Pitch that much cheaper to purchase.. Flicx UK has decided not to increase prices in 2016/17 and thus while the British Pound is at its lowest level for 35 years you will in effect find you will be saving between 18- 20% . Hurry and buy now while it lasts!!

Click Here to get a unique quote for your club/school/university or college team. The quote will include shipping direct to your address which is available by sea (transit time minimum 14 days) or air (transit time approx 5 days) … excludes manufacturing lead times, print lead times and custom clearance and local carriage times.

4. The growth of American College Cricket

Cricket as a sport is becoming more and more popular in the states and leagues such as American College Cricket (ACC) have been on the rise. Populous centers, such as New York, now have over 100 teams across 4 different state leagues. Since the advent of American College Cricket in 2009, over 70 colleges, including Harvard, have developed teams. Some games have been hosted on hockey fields since building a full cricket field is very expensive but now more and more clubs are turning to drop in or roll out pitches in order to convert any field into a cricket field and create a more authentic match. (Read the Harvard Case Study)

5. Longevity

The 2G Flicx Pitch is designed to last and can perform for well over 10 years (in fact we have pitches from our launch back in 1997 still going strong!! Whilst a choir mat can be used to host cricket these generally only last a season or two and therefore the cost effectiveness of the 2G Flicx Pitch is far superior giving your club value for money and a surface that will perform season after season. PLUS the Flicx provides a realistic playing surface against the inconsistency and irregularity of the ball bounce off other cheaper surfaces! The 2G Flicx Pitch is helping schools worldwide to develop their cricketing facilities

The Flicx portable pitch concept was originally developed in South Africa in 1997 to help create more opportunities for youngsters to play cricket in the post-apartheid era. In the subsequent years the Flicx Pitch has helped cricket to thrive and grow in places it has never been played before and in countries all around in the world including on top of Mt Everest!!

Cricket on a Flicx Pitch

Our artificial surface solution has solved a number of different facility issues in cricket and has a number of applications in the educational sector including

Fast forward to 2016 and Flicx UK are now manufacturing the pitch in the UK and have developed their 2G version which offers increased grip, improved bounce and a surface which takes seam and spin performance. The new pitch works excellently both indoors and outdoors, for hard and soft ball, for junior and senior cricket and the school market is really making the most of its versatility. Its USP is an unique ability to be rolled up and out to create a pop up wicket is an obvious benefit whilst it’s also excellent value for money compared to other more permanent synthetic mats and can be easily installed by a groundsman, after some initial preparation, and with regular maintenance will ensure very good performance and a consistent bounce…

  • Converting a grass field that might host football or rugby in the winter to a cricket field in the summer (preparation of grass underneath is advised)
  • Laid on top of an outfield to increasing capacity (ie-hosting two junior games at once)
  • Using a Flicx Pitch as a second wicket for training or friendlies taking pressure off your main square or when wet weather might cause damage.
  • Renovating or upgrading a worn astro in the nets
  • Rolled out on top of either astroturf pitches or rubbercrumb surfaces … the list goes on!

This multi-use concept, for a school provides great flexability, a point which was echoed by Mark Costin, Head of PE, Sacred Heart School (Battersea) who were looking to guarantee a playing surface to give consistency to their junior cricket practices, pushing the better cricketers who can now play their shots as the bounce is true. With no groundsman or expertise to prepare grass wickets, a drop-on pitch made a lot of sense for this South London School and Mark needed little prompting to praise the upgrade

“It’s absolutely transformed the standard of cricket that we can teach and then play matches against other schools.”

The Master in charge of cricket Stephen Jones of Harrow School points to its consistency. “I am impressed with the 2G Flicx Pitch coaching designs. They facilitate the development of good cricket playing techniques in younger players with the surface offering a true bounce, good spin and seam performance and still giving batsmen the confidence to play shots off their front foot.

“ We have used the pitches to host tournaments where multiple games can take place on one field”

Why choose the Flicx 2G Pitch??

  • Minutes to set up
  • Reliable pace and bounce
  • Convert various surfaces into a cricket pitch
  • Use it summer, winter, indoors or outdoors

The convenience and versatility across a plethora of scenarios has to be its star quality and Flicx are proud to help cricket to grow in the UK and all around the world including most high recently in a number of International Schools all keen to add cricket to their curriculum in places such as Dubai and Dulwich College, Shanghai where the climate has previously been a barrier …. How do you lay a 2G Flicx Pitch??

So your brand new 2G Flicx Pitch has arrived! (or you are thinking of getting one and you are studiously preparing) … our latest blog will tell you how to lay your pitch to ensure you get maximum performance from the surface.

First of all you have a decision to make …

Is your pitch to be laid permanently on your field (or in same position for at least for the season) or will it be used temporarily and rolled up and out each time you want to use it? See 1. for guidelines on laying your pitch permanently or 2. for temporary applications

  1. Permanent

Then the most important thing to consider in terms of laying your pitch correctly is that the tiles underneath contain feet which are 15mm long. For optimum pitch performance, these feet should touch the under surface. If they don’t then energy from the ball when bowled will be absorbed by the pitch and the bounce will be flatter. Therefore you initially need to cut the grass down very short so the feet of the pitch touch. Follow these steps

  1. Cut the grass right down low (to its roots) where you intend to roll out your new 2G Flicx wicket
  2. Ensure any high spots in the wicket are levelled off and all hollows filled in with a similar clay based topsoil
  3. Go over the area with a roller
  4. Lay the pitch itself – Watch this video or refer to our installation guide for full details and safety guidance on how to roll out your new pitch then secure it in the middle.

Top Tip “If you are looking to protect and conserve your main square, you can lay a 2G Flicx Pitch over the top of it, without any damage to the surface underneath which is ideal for hosting practice games or training sessions”

Rolling out a 2G Flicx Pitch

Rolling out a 2G Flicx Pitch

Over time as the grass grows through your pitch the bounce will improve further as the pitch “beds down”. You can mow over the pitch not a problem although gang mowers should not be used.

2. Temporary

If you plan to roll your pitch out then back up after your game the process is fairly similar. We recommend you cut the grass down to the roots first, go over with a roller then just lay the pitch over the top. On subsequently uses the pitch should be rolled in the same spot.

As you can see – Flicx makes light work for your groundsman and it’s such a quick, easy, portable cricket pitch solution so very popular with schools and clubs all around the world.

Its also worth noting that tf the under surface is fairly hard anyhow, the pitch will perform well on the outfield without additional mowing which is great if you want to pull the pitch in half and play two junior games or use the pitch for nets. The possibilities are endless!

Top 10 FAQ’s … Everything you need to know about the 2G Flicx Pitch

The 2G Flicx Pitch is a versatile cricket surface solution with various applications possible and many thousands of pitches being used to help grow the game in the UK  and all around the world. To help any prospective buyers to find out more about the product and how it performs, we have put together this FAQ’s blog covering some of the questions we are often asked … If you have any others, just post them in the comments box below and we will come straight back to you or for customer reviews, try our testimonials page.

1) On what surfaces can the 2G surface be used on? We blog on various applications and produce case studies from customers showing which surfaces the 2G Flicx Pitch can be used on … (Read More). More generally speaking the following surfaces are suitable

  • Grass… sub surface preparation recommended (see installation guide)
  • Astro
  • Wooden sprung floor (bounce level dependent on floor construction)
  • 3G rubbercrumb pitches (NB- Testing is ongoing on new generation rubbercrumb pitches designed for Rugby which contain a rubberised shock-pad, please contact us if this is your intended use)
  • Concrete
  • Sand – must be very compact not a beautiful white soft sandy Caribbean beach!!

2) Why is the 2G surface better than the original surface? The new surface itself produces a better ball bounce whilst seam and spin performance is improved. It provides the bowler with more traction and thus the ball does not “skid” through as it did with the original design…

The  new 2G surface  can be rolled out on many difference surfaces and still provides a suitable bounce, whereas the original surface was only really suitable for outdoor purposes. It is therefore far more universal and can be used both indoors and outdoors. In addition it’s easier and softer to roll out and is available in brighter colours and new designs with the option to brand up your pitch with a sponsor logo. The 2G product is now UK made and therefore we have been able to reduce lead times considerably whilst both surfaces were independently tested by the leading UK sports surfaces laboratory ( Labosport UK) where the new 2G surface came out far superior in terms of  its performance with reduced slip and improved ball bounce.

3) What is the best way to prepare a sub surface?  We provide details installation instructions with our pitches to ensure the sub surface is prepared in the correct way which maximises the performance of the pitch. We will honestly advise you if the product is suitable for your needs and requirements or not and pride ourselves on great customer service.

Installation Advice http://www.flicx.co.uk/pitches/technical-information/

The pitch its self does not need much maintenance. However depending on the surface it is rolled onto, there will be a certain maintenance required.  This is especially applicable to a grass under surface. The grass itself will need constant mowing during the growing season.  Its important that the “feet” of the under surface of the 2G Flicx Pitch sit firmly on the ground (grass will lift the pitch up).  Thus by mowing or simply using a light roller ( less than a ton) or running up and down the pitch it will resettle the pitch.  At the beginning of the season it is important that weekly maintenance is upheld to ensure a good consistent bounce.

4) Do the corners of the 2G pitch actually get staked down after being rolled? You can certainly stake them down –  try using 4- 5 inch nails.  Its great if you can leave your 2G Flicx Pitch down for the season and let the grass grow through it… and then you simply mow on top. This provides excellent bounce and a turf like pitch without the major maintenance of rolling and preparation.

5) How does the 2G pitch react after being stored for six months at a time? If you roll up the pitch tightly after the season ( straps are provided) and then store it standing up right it normally will be able to roll out quickly and easily with little damage-  The damage only comes when its loosely rolled and allowed to lie horizontally …  The tiles then get bent and will take a while before they flatten out. The plastic has what we call a “memory”, thus if stored for a while in a rolled up position it will take an hour or two to flatten out.  This can be done by simply leaving it flat on the playing surface. In warmer weather it will flatten out quicker.

6) For use over multiple days at a tournament is it better to lay and roll the pitch on day one and leave it in place for the next 4 to 5 days? Oh yes … the longer you can leave it down the more settled it is and thus the bounce remains truer.

7) What is the best type of footwear for this pitch? Rubber cricket shoes or court shoes? and should the batsmen avoid running on the pitch?? Both types of footwear are fine however we would recommend  that you avoid wearing studs as they can damage the pitch as well as possibly having them caught in the pitch and thus possibly twisting an ankle. There is no problem at all if the players run on the pitch however , like any synthetic, it can get a little slippery when wet.

8) How does the hard leather ball hold up over 40 overs?  The new 2G surface is more forgiving but you will see a certain amount of wear. For best results use Kookaburra balls from Australia. Both hard and soft balls can be used on a 2G Flicx Pitch to support junior and senior cricket games.

9) What makes the 2G Flicx Pitch so universal? There are so many applications of the 2G Flicx Pitch and its this versatility which makes it so universal. A club could use it inside for winter nets over the closed season, then move it outside in the summer to increase junior capacity or put it in the nets to replace a worn artificial. We have had the pitch host cricket games in the weirdest and wackiest place but most of all it allows more people to have the opportunity to play cricket and this is why the product was developed in the first instance 17 years ago.

Creating opportunities for more people to play cricket

Creating opportunities for more people to play cricket

10) Who generally buys the 2G Flicx surface? The Flicx Pitch continues to be popular with clubs and schools in the UK as well as overseas where stand alone cricket facilities are not so prevalent. Here you can convert a grass field or an artificial football pitch into a cricket venue and various leagues have sprung up on Flicx Pitches where playing cricket was previously not possible (Case Study). We work closely with Cricket Boards and Associations (and the ICC) worldwide to develop more opportunities for people to play cricket.
