Get set for a better Indoor Net!

With the county sides now returning for pre-season and top cricketing schools already making plans for the 2019 season, attention turns to winter nets. As the world’s most versatile cricket pitch solution, the new and improved 2G Flicx Pitch performs really well indoors and many top venues have already made the switch over from traditional matting.

Here are our business development manager Ashley Appleby’s top 8 reasons why the 2G Flicx Pitch is a great solution for your indoor nets …

  1. Improved bounce even on sprung floors over conventional matting
  2. Offers realistic turn and seam movement for bowlers
  3. Ball comes onto the bat encouraging stroke play
  4. Easy to roll up and store away (can be roll out by one person using the Flicx Safety Trolley)
  5. Uses less storage space, only ½ sq meter for 2 batting ends.
  6. Coaching pitches aid player development with focused colour coded zones
  7. Hard wearing, with correct use and care the 2G Flicx pitch is expected to last 5-10 years
  8. No taping required, the pitch won’t move… simply roll it out and play

One school to recently purchase 2G Flicx Pitches for both their indoor and outdoor programmes is Warwick School. Says Head of Cricket Simon Francis “The 2G Flicx skills pitch has been a fantastic addition for our cricketers for their winter training. Both batters and bowlers have benefited from more visual cues and targets, both individually and against each other. For our coaches it creates lots of opportunities to create challenges for bowlers and batsmen, as well as making it easier to judge where the ball pitched more easily. It has created excitement for the young bowlers as something new and interesting to interact with”

As well as in sportshalls with wooden sprung floors, the 2G Flicx Pitch can also be used in indoor football centres where 3G rubbercrumb surfaces are laid. This is a particularly popular application for indoor cricket leagues.

IMPORTANT | Remember the 2G Flicx Pitches are supplied in two half pitch batting rolls so one pitch is two batting ends for your indoor centre or sportshall. It’s important to follow a few key guidelines with regards to getting maximum performance from your pitch including storing the two rolls separately rolled up tightly on their ends.

Surrey Cricket Foundation and Flicx UK Come Together to Enhance State School Facilities

Surrey Cricket Foundation and Flicx UK have come together to support the development of state school facilities for cricket in Surrey and South London with the development of a new funding programme focused on the versatile 2G Flicx Pitch.

The 2G Flicx Pitch is the world’s most portable, versatile cricket pitch and was designed to enable grass fields to be converted to cricket venues with a roll out, roll up solution. The new and improved 2G tile is now UK made, easier to move, softer when rolling out and offers more grip and better performance, not just on grass but also on synthetic surfaces, playgrounds, indoor halls and more! Clubs and schools are now able to increase their cricket capacity for matches and training, which helps to facilitate increased participation, especially in areas where facilities are a challenge and green spaces at a premium.

The Surrey Cricket Foundation will consider funding up to 50% of the cost of a 2G Flicx Pitch where state schools can demonstrate the provision will enable them to enhance and increase participation in the game. The aim of the funding is to provide an opportunity for schools that may not be able provide a traditional cricket facilities due to the size and lay out of their school site. Flicx UK are integral to the partnership, offering discounted rates on a range of their products that are available within the funding scheme. The ultimate goal is to enable more people to play the game and although possibly a dream rather than a vision, we hope that one day we will be able to say that a Surrey player had their first opportunity to play cricket as a result of a Surrey funded 2G Flicx pitch.

Speaking about the relationship with Surrey Cricket Foundation, Flicx UK’s Business Development Manager Ashley Appleby said “We are delighted to support the Surrey Cricket Foundation and help their vital projects and programmes going forward. The funding pot available for 2G Flicx Pitch purchases by state schools in the county will be instrumental in helping many new young girls and boys access cricket and give them a reliable surface to play on which will in turn encourage shots to be played creating more excitement and enjoyment. That the 2G Flicx Pitch is approved by Surrey for use in matches and training, is a great seal of approval for the quality of the product following extensive tests and trials by stakeholders within the county with excellent feedback and results.”

Participation Manager, Simon Hards said, “We are really excited by the partnership with Flicx UK. Working together we believe we can have a significant impact on participation in state schools and this comes as we approach what is being described as the biggest summer of cricket ever with the World Cup and Ashes taking place in England next year. Beyond that cricket will once again appear on terrestrial television from 2020 onwards and we hope the supply of 2G Flicx Pitches into the school network will enable further growth of the game.”

Director of Participation, Paul Taylor said, “Surrey Cricket Foundation’s mission is to support and improve cricket across Surrey and South London and we believe that this partnership is another example, supporting the state school network to improve their facilities. We hope that this in turn will help schools to increase participation in the game, giving young people a great cricketing experience that will foster a life long love for the game.”

Preparing your ground for the new Cricket season #AskAsh Episode 3

As it’s currently pre-season for clubs and schools in the UK and northern hemisphere, this episode of #AskAsh covers what you need to do to prepare your ground ahead of laying a 2G Flicx Pitch …

The advice from Flicx UK Business Development Manager Ashley Appleby in this episode centres around the application of a 2G Flicx Pitch on grass. Particularly covering how to use it to add facilities to an existing ground for example, using the 2G Flicx Pitch as a second wicket to extend the cricket season (see Bute CCC case study for an example of a club in Scotland using our product as an all weather solution) and also when rolling out the 2G Flicx Pitch on the outfield for nets or to host multiple junior cricket matches. In terms of installing, the 2G Flicx Pitch is very quick and easy to use and if you follow the five pointers below you can achieve a realistic playing surface when laying it on grass…

1. IDENTIFY | Select a firm, flat area 22 x 2m on your grass field where you lay your 2G Flicx Pitch. Put on your gloves.
2. PREPARE | Cut the grass short in this area. Grass should be cut to 10-15mm with shorter grass giving you optimum performance Fill all diverts with a similar compact-able soil to the base surface and level off any high spots. Rolling is recommended for optimum
performance before each use.
3. PLACE | Position your two strapped pitch rolls in the middle of the strip. The 2G Flicx Match Pitch is rolled from the middle to the two opposite creases so place both rolls parallel to each other with the ends facing each other and remove the straps. Do not unroll the
pitch.
4. ROLL OUT | Make fine adjustments to align the connectors. This should be done when the two sections are still rolled up. Once all the connectors are correctly positioned, clip the two batting ends together. Roll the two batting ends out from the middle to the creases.
5. WAIT | Your 2G Flicx Pitch needs time to settle. We advise rolling out your 2G Flicx Pitch 30-45 minutes prior to each use. Failure to do this may result in low, uneven bounce at the start of play.

Applying the “MCC Spirit of Cricket” lecture by Brendon McCullum to Flicx UK

This week in our team meeting, we listened to parts of the Brendon McCullum MCC lecture. Given everyone at Flicx is passionate about sport, we often apply sporting case studies to business and it certainly influences how we conduct ourselves as a company. The lessons you pick up from playing team sports, certainly apply to corporate teams and we all believe can steer your life in general in so many positive ways. The first instance of this was when we attended a High Performance event run by Jeremy Snape of Sporting Edge … now following McCullum’s moving lecture last week at Lords, we discussed our own team values, what we stand for and how we would like to be perceived by our industry colleagues and customers.

brendon-mccullum-spirit-of-cricket-lecture-youtube

Brendon McCullums Spirit of Cricket Lecture

“It was agreed that we were seen as arrogant, emotional, distant, up-ourselves and uninterested in our followers. The environment that the younger players were being welcomed into was really poor – there was a very traditional hierarchy, where senior players ruled the roost. Ultimately, we concluded that individually and collectively we lacked character.

We recognised that we had to change. We wanted to personify the traits that we identified in New Zealanders – to be humble and hardworking. We wanted to be respected by our long-suffering fans in New Zealand. We wanted to be respected by our opposition; and before we could demand this we had to learn to respect them.”

McCullum spoke openly and honestly about the transition that the NZ team took and the values that they now play by… “In fact, if every sportsman simply tried to be the best he could be, and attempted to behave decently along the way, you’ve pretty much summed up every available optimal strategy in one simple sentence.”

So what did we take from Brendon’s lecture?

Flicx is people – Rich, Gary, Ash, Rob and Kate … a small team – but we all have a passion for our unique, quality, innovative sporting brands and that is underpinned by our focus on delivering high levels of personal service – we hope our customers like dealing with us because of us as people! We are certainly appreciative of the strong relationships that we have we many of our customers – its more than just business to us. Our tagline is “Bringing Sport to Life” and the history of the development of the Flicx Pitch by founder Richard Beghin shows our passion for developing sport through our products. We take pride in being a company who has more of a personal approach to selling – and we hope this comes across in our actions.

We then discussed our team – Ash spoke about the decision to leave his home in South Africa to come and work for Flicx, being an easy one and we are very happy to have him as part of the team. We are going to try and make more time to chat over a cup of tea or game of Crazy Catch so help develop our bond further – its so easy to get so caught up in your own role when its busy but taking time to reward the good work of teammates is always important and likewise pick up when people are having a bad day.

The lessons of sport are so powerful and wide ranging – Leicester City’s incredible title triumph shows how far team spirit can take you and how important the values that you work by each day are in creating the foundations of success and the importance of having lots of fun along the way. Attracting new players and boosting participation with the 2G Flicx Pitch

Much has been debated around how to get more people playing cricket…

Attracting new players

Participation numbers have dropped by 64,000 in a single year, down from 908,000 in 2013 to 844,000 last season. Just as alarmingly, five per cent of all organised fixtures were conceded in 2014 because at least one of the teams was unable to field 11 bodies, with the obvious knock-on effects of such cancellations breeding disillusionment among those who have given up their weekends for a cause they want, with profoundly good reason, to believe in. And there’s more: less than a third of those 844,000 regard themselves as ‘core’ players – defined as people who  could commit to at least 12 matches in a league season – with the best part of the remaining 600,000 deemed ‘occasional’ or ‘cameo’ players.

It’s not a single approach but a philosophy where making it easy and enjoyable for everyone of all ages and abilities is the way to go but being able to offer something distinctive and innovative when it comes to cricketing facilities is certainly a real plus.

Whether it’s a cricket square or in a field, on a beach or in a sports hall, a cricket surface you can trust is an argument for quality of practice and value for money. Talking to Head of PE at Sacred Heart School in Battersea, Mark Costin, his school stumped up for a 2G Flicx Match pitch to guarantee a playing surface where the bounce was true.

In his case, the investment was well worth it because it made for consistent junior cricket practice and pushed the better cricketers who no longer had to rely on a makeshift, bobbly football pitch.

With no groundsman or expertise to prepare grass wickets, a drop-on pitch made a lot of sense for this South London school and Mark needed little prompting to praise the upgrade:

“It’s absolutely transformed the standard of cricket that we can teach and means we also now play matches against other schools.” – Mark Costin, Head of PE, Sacred Heart School (Battersea).

Mark also makes the valid point that the Last Man Stands format has gone some way to breaking the taboo, and perhaps even snobbery, that we should all play on a grass wicket rather than an artificial pitch. Top 10 FAQ’s … Everything you need to know about the 2G Flicx Pitch

The 2G Flicx Pitch is a versatile cricket surface solution with various applications possible and many thousands of pitches being used to help grow the game in the UK  and all around the world. To help any prospective buyers to find out more about the product and how it performs, we have put together this FAQ’s blog covering some of the questions we are often asked … If you have any others, just post them in the comments box below and we will come straight back to you or for customer reviews, try our testimonials page.

1) On what surfaces can the 2G surface be used on? We blog on various applications and produce case studies from customers showing which surfaces the 2G Flicx Pitch can be used on … (Read More). More generally speaking the following surfaces are suitable

  • Grass… sub surface preparation recommended (see installation guide)
  • Astro
  • Wooden sprung floor (bounce level dependent on floor construction)
  • 3G rubbercrumb pitches (NB- Testing is ongoing on new generation rubbercrumb pitches designed for Rugby which contain a rubberised shock-pad, please contact us if this is your intended use)
  • Concrete
  • Sand – must be very compact not a beautiful white soft sandy Caribbean beach!!

2) Why is the 2G surface better than the original surface? The new surface itself produces a better ball bounce whilst seam and spin performance is improved. It provides the bowler with more traction and thus the ball does not “skid” through as it did with the original design…

The  new 2G surface  can be rolled out on many difference surfaces and still provides a suitable bounce, whereas the original surface was only really suitable for outdoor purposes. It is therefore far more universal and can be used both indoors and outdoors. In addition it’s easier and softer to roll out and is available in brighter colours and new designs with the option to brand up your pitch with a sponsor logo. The 2G product is now UK made and therefore we have been able to reduce lead times considerably whilst both surfaces were independently tested by the leading UK sports surfaces laboratory ( Labosport UK) where the new 2G surface came out far superior in terms of  its performance with reduced slip and improved ball bounce.

3) What is the best way to prepare a sub surface?  We provide details installation instructions with our pitches to ensure the sub surface is prepared in the correct way which maximises the performance of the pitch. We will honestly advise you if the product is suitable for your needs and requirements or not and pride ourselves on great customer service.

Installation Advice http://www.flicx.co.uk/pitches/technical-information/

The pitch its self does not need much maintenance. However depending on the surface it is rolled onto, there will be a certain maintenance required.  This is especially applicable to a grass under surface. The grass itself will need constant mowing during the growing season.  Its important that the “feet” of the under surface of the 2G Flicx Pitch sit firmly on the ground (grass will lift the pitch up).  Thus by mowing or simply using a light roller ( less than a ton) or running up and down the pitch it will resettle the pitch.  At the beginning of the season it is important that weekly maintenance is upheld to ensure a good consistent bounce.

4) Do the corners of the 2G pitch actually get staked down after being rolled? You can certainly stake them down –  try using 4- 5 inch nails.  Its great if you can leave your 2G Flicx Pitch down for the season and let the grass grow through it… and then you simply mow on top. This provides excellent bounce and a turf like pitch without the major maintenance of rolling and preparation.

5) How does the 2G pitch react after being stored for six months at a time? If you roll up the pitch tightly after the season ( straps are provided) and then store it standing up right it normally will be able to roll out quickly and easily with little damage-  The damage only comes when its loosely rolled and allowed to lie horizontally …  The tiles then get bent and will take a while before they flatten out. The plastic has what we call a “memory”, thus if stored for a while in a rolled up position it will take an hour or two to flatten out.  This can be done by simply leaving it flat on the playing surface. In warmer weather it will flatten out quicker.

6) For use over multiple days at a tournament is it better to lay and roll the pitch on day one and leave it in place for the next 4 to 5 days? Oh yes … the longer you can leave it down the more settled it is and thus the bounce remains truer.

7) What is the best type of footwear for this pitch? Rubber cricket shoes or court shoes? and should the batsmen avoid running on the pitch?? Both types of footwear are fine however we would recommend  that you avoid wearing studs as they can damage the pitch as well as possibly having them caught in the pitch and thus possibly twisting an ankle. There is no problem at all if the players run on the pitch however , like any synthetic, it can get a little slippery when wet.

8) How does the hard leather ball hold up over 40 overs?  The new 2G surface is more forgiving but you will see a certain amount of wear. For best results use Kookaburra balls from Australia. Both hard and soft balls can be used on a 2G Flicx Pitch to support junior and senior cricket games.

9) What makes the 2G Flicx Pitch so universal? There are so many applications of the 2G Flicx Pitch and its this versatility which makes it so universal. A club could use it inside for winter nets over the closed season, then move it outside in the summer to increase junior capacity or put it in the nets to replace a worn artificial. We have had the pitch host cricket games in the weirdest and wackiest place but most of all it allows more people to have the opportunity to play cricket and this is why the product was developed in the first instance 17 years ago.

Creating opportunities for more people to play cricket

Creating opportunities for more people to play cricket

10) Who generally buys the 2G Flicx surface? The Flicx Pitch continues to be popular with clubs and schools in the UK as well as overseas where stand alone cricket facilities are not so prevalent. Here you can convert a grass field or an artificial football pitch into a cricket venue and various leagues have sprung up on Flicx Pitches where playing cricket was previously not possible (Case Study). We work closely with Cricket Boards and Associations (and the ICC) worldwide to develop more opportunities for people to play cricket.

The Flicx Pitch … Taking cricket to where it has never been played before!

Congratulations  to all those who planned, participated and were involved in the recent successful attempt to play cricket on top of Kilimanjaro – an amazing success.! A special note should go to David Harper, for his vision ,drive and determiation to make this challenge happen… without him I am sure the Mt Kili Madness project would have stumbled on a few occasions.

Flicx UK were and are very proud to be involved in both successful attempts to take cricket to new levels. Firstly in 2009, when cricket was played at Everest base camp and now in 2014,  at the top of Kilimanjaro and at a height of over 500 meters above the first successful attempt.  That makes Flicx one of a very few companies to have been involved in both world records, a very proud moment in the short history of our company.

It was in 2004, together with the International Cricket Council (ICC), when we came up with a global campaign called “Taking Cricket to where it has never been played before”. People from around the world were invited to share with us their stories of how cricket had changed their lives.  There were some inspirational stories and photographs of Cricket being introduced to islands such as Vanuatu, how families in PNG were now playing the game… we even have photos of Cricket being played ( on a Flicx Pitch) close to the Eiffel Tower, down a mine, in Egypt close to the Pyramids, up in the high forests in Swaziland, on the ice plains of Sweden and many many more!! Never, did we believe we would be involved in taking cricket to Base Camp Everest and now to the top of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.

Flicx will continue on its quest to “Take Cricket to where it has never been played before”-  providing sporting opportunities to communities, and individuals who will benefit from this wonderful game. Next stop the moon please Mr Branson!
