Flicx UK support Bute’s cricket development programme in schools

Bute cricket club’s youth development programme gets into full swing this month with competitions involving all three primary schools.

The first in a series of events takes place at the Port Bannatyne Gala with the opening rounds of the schools Kwik Cricket Tournament for Primary 6 and 7 classes sponsored by Flicx UK, suppliers of the club’s all weather surface, which will be rolled out for the event.

The Bute club’s coach Alan Peacock has been running a training programme in the primary schools since April and has put together squads of ten from each school. “All schools have made great progress and if we get some decent weather on Sunday I am confident we’ll get some good games and the teams are too close to call,” he said.
The Gala Day matches form the first part of the tournament, with the finals and trophy winners to be decided on Saturday, June 20 at The Meadows, Rothesay prior to Bute Cricket Club’s Sri Lankan themed match against the Cavaliers.

As well as helping to develop cricket in primary schools the club has been working towards forming educational and cultural links between the island’s primary school children and their counterparts in Sri Lanka.

The initiative to form a bond between the two communities follows the decision by the former Sri Lankan cricket captain Kumar Sangakarra to become Bute Cricket’s first associate member.

The Bute children have been encouraged to write letters to Sri Lankan children, produce drawings to illustrate their lives on the island and design a ‘Children’s Flag for Bute’.

The project is being sponsored by specialist holiday company Experience Travel Group who has provided the schools with posters and online travel videos to give the children an overview of life in Sri Lanka.

The closing date for the Flag Competition is Thursday, June 18, and the judging and prize giving will take place after the Kwik Cricket presentations on the Saturday.

Bute Cricket’s Barbara Lloyd, who has organised the Schools Sri Lankan project said: “The head teachers at all three Bute primary schools have been very supportive of the idea which fits in well with the children’s Global Citizenship studies.

“We’re hoping as many of the children and their parents will come along to see their work on display and at the same time support the Kwik cricket matches.”

Although the cricket competition is limited to P6 and P7 pupils, the flag design competition is open to all age groups.

After the exhibition of drawings and letters, all the children’s work will then be forwarded on to a Sri Lankan school with the help of Experience Travel Group.

All 2G Flicx Pitches are now UK made and here’s how!

The original Flicx Pitch was developed and manufactured in South Africa – however now with the advent and development of our 2G product; we have been able to move all production and assembly over to here in the UK which means lower lead times on all orders and completely flexibility over the design and colours of your pitch (for those choosing to move away from our traditional green match pitch)

A full length pitch (22.12m x 1.8m) takes around an hour to put together and is made from a number of these tiles which themselves are manufactured in Suffolk by a plastics company called Roland Plastics Ltd. They specialise in the supply of precision engineered injection mouldings and assemblies in a wide range thermoplastic materials, produced on state of the art machines.

From here, our assembly men ( Rob) pitch together the pitches, clipping and hammering the slots in place before trimming the excess clips from any outer edges. The whole process takes between 1-2 hours. You will notice from our blog and website, that we now also produce two brand new coaching pitches, the skills pitch and the eagle-eyed pitch with the same process applying only with coloured tiles being used in line with the design so with coloured strips to show pitching in line as well as target tiles to aid the skill development of young players.

Mt Kili Madness and Flicx UK …taking cricket to a whole new level

Today, Wednesday 16th July, will see the official launch of Mt Kili Madness – a fundraising attempt to play the highest game of cricket ever at an impressive 5,785 metres. Flicx UK are playing a big part in this match as official supplier of the pitch, a new 2G surface which enables you to play cricket on any flat surface, just by rolling it out. The pitch will be carried in pieces up Africa’s highest peak in Tanzania before being joined up and rolled out for the record breaking game.

Mt Kili Madness

Mt Kili Madness

22 players, with the all star line up to be announced at the Oval in the official launch, will risk altitude sickness and many other challenges all to raise money to stop poaching and beat cancer. The expedition will set off on Saturday 20th September for a 7 day hike to the summit where the 2G Flicx Pitch will be laid, stumps set up and the cucumber sandwiches cut in preparation for a 20-20 game where the winners will be crowned kings of the mountains whilst the losers face a long trip back down (carrying all the kit!).

NB- To qualify for World Record status, the two teams must play a game of T20 overseen by qualified ECB umpires. Both teams will have to do so after a challenging seven-day climb, risking altitude sickness – a feat which 30% of climbers fail.

Mt Kili Madness is aiming to break the world record for the highest cricket game which stands at 5,100m and took place at Everest base camp. Flicx UK supplied the pitch to that trip too on the proviso that the pitch will be donated to a local school. The legacy plan has been put in place for the new 2G Flicx Pitch donated to Kili Madness with owner Richard Beghin delighted to support this unusual fundraising bid for Cancer Research UK, the Rwanda Cricket stadium foundation and Tusk “Mt Kili Madness is an exciting project which we were delighted to lend our backing to in the form of a donation of one of our new 2G pitches. The new surface will enable the record breaking game to be a great one and all raising vital funds for two great charities. The legacy is important to us as a company too and we will be pleased leave the pitch with a local school to enable them to enjoy cricket well after the Mt Kili Madness teams have gone.

Organiser David Harper added: “Playing at the top of Mt Kilimanjaro will bring a world record to Africa, raise significant sponsorship for three very worthwhile charities, and help raise awareness of the harm that poaching is doing to wildlife across the continent…as well as allowing me to indulge my fantasy of playing against some high quality international cricketers.”

This promises to be a truly an epic challenge, an unforgettable experience, and one which will put cricket at the top of the world. Here at Flicx UK we will be following the story every step of the way as we believe cricket has a wonderful ability to bring people together. 2G Flicx Pitch at Littletown CC is officially opened by Durham cricketer Chris Rushworth

Littletown CC under 11’s played the first ever game on the clubs new 2G Flicx Pitch on Saturday and put in a performance to match beating Etherley, under the watchful eye of Durham’s Chris Rushworth who had earlier cut the ribbon and officially opened the new pitch which was the clubs prize for winning a nationwide competition run in the Cricketer Magazine.

BqFQmZIIIAAdnGZ.jpg large

The cricketing fun day included a Q+A with Chris, a BBQ and lots of Crazy Catch games as well as a fundraising raffle which raised over £100 for Chris’ “Dry 2014” challenge in aid of Save the Children. A great day was had by all and the cricket on the new 2G Flicx wicket was to a very high standard with the Littletown juniors pulling our all the stops in a fine batting display, in their first ever win!

Speaking about their prize from Flicx UK, Edd Finn the Littletown CC Chairman said “The Flicx 2G pitch has given our teams the chance to regularly practice on our square without the worry of cutting up our wickets, whilst also offering genuine bounce and pitch movements that a grass pitch would offer. It has enabled us to play junior games when our grass pitches have been too damp and has produced good sensible bounce that has enabled a well contested game to be carried out.”

Littletown CC has been transformed recently from an “overgrown wasteland” into a “field of dream” and the club has further ambitious plans to redevelop and extend the pavilion in the next few years. With a great community spirit and some passionate volunteers – we are certain that Littletown are destined for a big future. Our event video will be released soon, in the meantime please do check out our photo gallery below
