With the county sides now returning for pre-season and top cricketing schools already making plans for the 2019 season, attention turns to winter nets. As the world’s most versatile cricket pitch solution, the new and improved 2G Flicx Pitch performs really well indoors and many top venues have already made the switch over from traditional matting.
Here are our business development manager Ashley Appleby’s top 8 reasons why the 2G Flicx Pitch is a great solution for your indoor nets …
Improved bounce even on sprung floors over conventional matting
Offers realistic turn and seam movement for bowlers
Ball comes onto the bat encouraging stroke play
Easy to roll up and store away (can be roll out by one person using the Flicx Safety Trolley)
Uses less storage space, only ½ sq meter for 2 batting ends.
Coaching pitches aid player development with focused colour coded zones
Hard wearing, with correct use and care the 2G Flicx pitch is expected to last 5-10 years
No taping required, the pitch won’t move… simply roll it out and play
One school to recently purchase 2G Flicx Pitches for both their indoor and outdoor programmes is Warwick School. Says Head of Cricket Simon Francis “The 2G Flicx skills pitch has been a fantastic addition for our cricketers for their winter training. Both batters and bowlers have benefited from more visual cues and targets, both individually and against each other. For our coaches it creates lots of opportunities to create challenges for bowlers and batsmen, as well as making it easier to judge where the ball pitched more easily. It has created excitement for the young bowlers as something new and interesting to interact with”
As well as in sportshalls with wooden sprung floors, the 2G Flicx Pitch can also be used in indoor football centres where 3G rubbercrumb surfaces are laid. This is a particularly popular application for indoor cricket leagues.
IMPORTANT | Remember the 2G Flicx Pitches are supplied in two half pitch batting rolls so one pitch is two batting ends for your indoor centre or sportshall. It’s important to follow a few key guidelines with regards to getting maximum performance from your pitch including storing the two rolls separately rolled up tightly on their ends.
It’s highly important to roll your 2G Flicx Pitch back up tightly after use and store in a coil shape. Follow these top tips to get the maximum performance from your portable pitch. Unlike the original Flicx Pitch, the new 2G Flicx Pitch is softer and much easier to use. The upgrades to the surface have resulted in more versatility in terms of pitch applications but also advice that the 2G Flicx Pitch should be used as a roll out, roll up surface rather than permanently laid.
Here our business development manager Ashley Appleby, shows you how to roll back up your 2G Flicx Pitch correctly after use.
ROLL UP RECAP
Unzip the full match pitch into two batting ends
Insert two straps under the pitch
Roll the pitch back up from crease to the middle
Roll as tightly as possible into a coil and keep square
Strap up and tie together for safety
By following these steps you will get the best performance from your 2G Flicx Pitch season after season.

Flicx UK, home of the worlds most versatile cricket pitch, supported the Worcester Street Sixes tournament last week which involved 18 teams of six a side, using soft balls, plying street cricket on Worcester High Street!
Street Sixes is a charity cricket event supported by the Worcestershire Ambassadors and played in the middle of Worcester High Street with the aim of raising funds and awareness to take cricket to places its not normally played, supporting young children from underprivileged backgrounds in Worcestershire. The matches were played on a range of colourful 2G Flicx Batting ends which gave the tournament vibrancy and a consistent surface for the players to enjoy. Worcestershire CC used their own bespoke branded green street 6’s pitch, there was a blue Wicketz pitch loaned by the local Lords Taviners group and Flicx brought their new beige pitch along. Take a listen to our Business Development Manager Ashley Appleby being interview at the event which was also featured on BBC West Midlands.
Speaking about the event Tom Raymond-Hill, Cricket Development Director at Worcestershire Cricket Board said “We’re really pleased with how Street6s has gone this year and the link up with Flicx. Street6s in its essence is about bringing the business community together to play cricket in an unusual place which in turn raises funds to take cricket into deprived communities. On this occasion the funds raised have purchased Flicx Pitches which were not only used on the day but will be donated to local Wicketz hubs.”
Torrevieja Cricket Club is located in Spain’s south-eastern Alicante province, on the Costa Blanca and the club has recently acquired a Flicx Pitch which has provided a much more consistent playing surface for their matches and training.
Cricket in Spain is growing in popularity with ex-pats from all cricketing countries participating with a few natives sprinkled here and there, with Torrevieja participating in the East and Central cricket league which pits them against sides including Madrid CC, Valencia, La Manga, two teams from Alicante and Sporting L ’Alfas in 40 over and T20 matches. Facilities are varied from the high-quality provision at La Manga CC to clubs playing on coconut matting where the bounce isn’t consistent and there is no way of repairing any wear and tear on the surface. This was the case at Torrevieja who were very keen to investigate better alternatives which would make for higher quality matches.
After Madrid CC purchased a new 2G Flicx Pitch, enquiries were made by Torrevieja about using their old original Flicx Pitch and soon the roll out solution was being shipped to Torre’s ground which is a council owned “multi use” athletics track.
As you might expect with a grass surface of this nature and with its athletics applications, it can be fairly undulated especially in areas of high javelin and shot-put traffic, so the fact the Flicx pitch is firm and flat means that it mitigates these areas of unevenness. The pitch is rolled out and back up after each game and the grass is cut short at the venue following the purchase of a petrol- driven lawnmower by the club to supplement the council’s best efforts.
The quality of the matches since the acquisition of the Flicx Pitch is much higher so explains chairman Graham Shelton “We are really happy with the Flicx Pitch; the bounce is much more consistent than we were achieving previously and its quicker and more convenient to lay the pitch. With the modular tile layout, it has the added advantage of being able to easily replace any damaged tile quickly and cost effectively. We pretty much play all year round apart from when it’s raining when the pitch can become slippery and have already spoken to colleagues at other clubs around Spain where the Flicx Pitch would also be suitable and like us are ready to take cricket in the region to the next level”
The association has purchased a new 2G Flicx pitch from agents Complete Cricket NZ which is a portable cricket strip that can be used to play the game anywhere. It’s 18m in length and can be varied, allowing it to be used for various age groups and doesn’t need to be flattened by a heavy roller and has crease marks included in the surface, ready to roll out.
South Canterbury Cricket development manager Shane Gilkison said the primary schools’ tournament at Ashbury Park was about encouraging more people to have a go at the game. “It’s about giving people a chance to have a crack at something different, and that’s what these tournaments are all about.”
He said the arrival of the new Flicx pitch helped. “It means all the games could be played on some sort of proper surface rather than a mowed strip.”
Winchester Rural School pupils Jacob Gilkison and Ethan Bolt were pleased with the new surface. “I play quite a lot of cricket and I thought it was pretty cool,” Jacob said. Ten teams were competing in the tournament, Geraldine Primary, St Joseph’s Temuka, St Joseph’s Timaru provided two, Highfield School and Winchester Rural provided three stories each.

We are rushed off our feet at the moment, fulfilling orders for 2G Flicx Pitches in one of our busiest ever starts to the new cricket season. Clubs (and schools) are increasingly seeing the value of the versatility of the 2G Flicx Pitch and all the benefits that it can offer in terms of developing existing facilities or adding new capacity for both matches and training.
Your 2G Flicx Pitch will arrive in two rolls. These can be easily moved by 1 person using the 2G Flicx Safety Trolley and make for a portable resource. The same pitch can be rolled onto a grass field or astro/rubbercrumb pitch to convert it into a cricketing venue whilst you can also unzip the pitch in the middle which will give you two batting ends for junior sessions or in the nets. A 2G Flicx Pitch is around 1/3 of the price of a NTP but offers much more flexibility.
For clubs who struggle with enough resource (time or expertise) to maintain a turf wicket, the 2G Flicx Pitch, which has all weather properties, means the season can be extended by taking pressure off your main square or by using it for training or 2nd/3rd team matches. We have even found clubs using the pitch in wet conditions when play usually isn’t possible PLUS it also works indoors so you can have a flat, firm surface for nets which will last years and years provide great cost effectiveness for your clubs budget.
Our pitches also come in various coaching designs which will help develop the skills of younger players and our new multi-aged pitch (MAP) means that different age group games can be played on the same wicket, just by moving the stumps to the different crease markings. Speaking about some of our recent customers, business development manager Ashley Appleby commented
When demonstrating the 2G Flicx Pitch, clubs are always impressed with how were the pitch performs on a range of different surfaces and how easy our new product is to use. The specially formulated synthetic compound has more rubber in the moulded tile making it softer and malleable to touch, which is great for British conditions and offers good pace and bounce when used on a firm flat surface.
In addition clubs are taking advantage of our branding options to get sponsors to invest in the pitch. New digital printing means that a logo can be added into the pitch for only a small investment, but the perceived value for the partner is very high particularly with the PR opportunities available.
Transform your garden into a practice batting facility with the help of a Flicx Home Academy just like Philip Hesketh who created this area at their Staffordshire home last summer to help his 14 year old son Rohan to develop his cricketing skills. The Flicx Home Academy is a package deal comprising of a 2G Flicx Pitch or Batting End and Net system (a bowling machine can also be added on request)
Flicx Home Academy
It sounds like every young cricketers dream, the ability to play cricket all the time in the safety of your own home and with the huge convenience factor that this brings but in fact is it’s a relatively simple vision to realise with Flicx as our roll out wickets do not require any civil works to install and ongoing maintenance is minimal.
The Hesketh’s first heard about the Flicx Home Academy via a friend who also has a Home Academy system installed and after researching the product and how to use it at www.flicx.co.uk and taking advice from Flicx MD Richard Beghin, Philip was ready to purchase and hugely convinced of its merits and value. Preparation was relatively easy and involved cutting back the grass short and rolling the area to ensure it was flat and firm before rolling out their chosen product, a 10 x 1.8m skills batting end. The 2G Flicx skills range comes complete with coloured target tiles to assist with reading a balls line and length thus helps to develop good decision making skills for shot selection.
“We are really happy with the Flicx Home Academy we purchased and how it performs” says Philip. “The 2G Flicx Pitch produces a realistic bounce, similar to a turf wicket that matches are played on, so it allows Rohan to have the convenience of practicing his batting at home. The obvious benefit here is the ability for him to complete extra training, outside standard training sessions offered by his club and school, thus helping him to get an extra edge to his game.
Rohan often does throwdown’s to get his eye in before matches and because the area is netted, it is also used by both my children to safely practice catching without risk to the garden/ house windows!! “
Flexibility and versatility are additional selling points of the 2G Flicx Pitch range. The Hesketh’s mow over their pitch as the grass grows through the tiles and it will be kept down permanently but it is equally possible to roll the pitch out and back up again after each use or at the end of each season. It could even be used inside a garage during the winter or on top of other surfaces that might be available in the home environment. As well as our standard designs, sizes and specifications (shipped anywhere in the world) Flicx UK are also able to bespoke a home pitch to a customer’s specific requirements; if you are interested in learning more or have any particular questions just contact us via our website www.flicx.co.uk or call one of our advisors on 01295 816765.
NB – Rohan has now been selected for the Staffordshire County team which is testament to the extra work he is putting in.
The 2G Flicx Pitch is the world’s most versatile, portable, cricket pitch solution suitable for adult or junior cricket, matches or training played both inside or outside. We now manufacture the pitch right here in the UK and the specially formulated synthetic compound has more rubber in the moulded tile making it softer and malleable to touch, which is great for British conditions and offers good pace and bounce when used on a firm flat surface.
